Ode magazine describes themselves on their website as “a print and online publication about positive news, about the people and ideas that are changing our world for the better.” The Abaca tea box was designed as a sustainable tea product to promote a more sustainable world.
The process of creating the tree-free paper involves several steps. First, abaca fibers and cogon grass are cut into short strands. Abaca looks similar to a banana, the fibers from its body/trunk are used in making the paper. Cogon grass is an abundant wild grass that grows on the hills or in open fields. Next, the abaca and cogon grass fibers are cooked until the fibers are tender. This takes about 4 to 5 hours.
The tenderized fibers are then beaten with an electric beater up to its finest stage. The fibers are mixed to an even consistency; dyes, if needed, are added during this stage. Fibers are then scooped using mold and deckle, which is made of wood and screen – two pieces are placed on top of each other during scooping.
The papers are then laid on cheesecloth and pressed with steel plates and a hydraulic jack. The cheesecloth prevents the fibers from falling off. Then the wet paper is sun dried. During the rainy season, steam drying is used.
